2. Timeline
| Date | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1995 | Boto Design plans, Sheet A-5.1 "Electrical Design Specifications". Note 1: a single-phase tech-power panel, "orange" isolated-ground (IG) receptacles, a separate green ground conductor per branch back to a ground buss panel in the machine rooms, and no lighting or HVAC on tech power. Note 2: "Provide 5' solid copper ground rods in each machine room", a 2" copper buss on isolated bushings, and 3/4" conduit with a #2 conductor from each buss bar to the ground rod, then to the electrical room "for future connection to secondary neutral ground point of isolation transformer." [F] | ~/trc-electrical/source/imessage/2026-08-03-handoff-img0-sheetA5.1-notes.png |
| 2024-05-24 | Commercial property inspection by Stuart Huff. Service: "120/240 volts", 200/400 A, and the form ticks both 3-phase and single-phase. Grounding: the visible grounding goes to a cold-water pipe and a ground rod and "appears serviceable". Outlets: "There are outlets that did not have grounding when tested." Panels: Zinsco panels, and subpanels with missing knock-outs. Wiring: a mix of cloth and plastic. [F] | ~/trc-electrical/source/files/2024-06-13-property-inspection-1660-9th-spero-midler.pdf |
| 2024-09 | RodCo quote #24 offered a 3-phase 240V to 208/120V transformer for the main-stage distribution box, for "isolation from noise due to lighting and equipment" ($3,330). It also offered new circuits for Studio B and the Podcast room. Invoice #54 bills a new sub panel, alley outlets, the EV charger and the sauna, but not the transformer. [F] The transformer was never installed. [I] | ~/trc-electrical/source/files/2024-09-* |
| 2025-08-10 | Ari: "The entire building just flickered multiple times." [F] | chat.db 826852 |
| 2025-08-29 | Greg to Jolby Kimble: "clients today had some issues with buzzing on different channels, a low freq electrical humm on a channel, and some channels not being usable" in the mixing room. [F] | chat.db 833039 |
| 2025-10-23 | There is buzz on the livestream. Alex: "It's almost certainly the lights causing the buzz." Greg: "I still hear buzz on the stream." Alex: "Should be fixed." [F] | chat.db 850917-850937 |
| 2025-10-24 | Greg to Farzad, before the outdoor electrical work: "make sure whatever we do properly connects with the ground system and has no chance of causing a buzz in any of the lines of the studio." Farzad: "Sure.. NP" and "I need to finish all the outside electrical work … before the rainy season." [F] | chat.db 851201-851212 |
| 2025-11-03 | Farzad: the gym and kitchen outlet circuits "were lacking neutral wire so [re]wired all the way back to the panel." Jacob, on 11/4: "yes there is a neutral wire now." [F] | chat.db 853302, 853534 |
| 2025-12-01 | Jacob: "crazy buzz from the lobby speakers after Farzad's guys came in … Something to do with the sub but Devin's gunna fix it." [F] | chat.db 863180-863181 |
| 2026-01-12 | An SCE crew worked in the alley behind the building (4 kV "Surfrider" circuit). [F] Any link to the grounding fault is unproven. [I] | ~/trc-electrical/source/files/2026-01-12-sce-crew-tailboard-alley.jpg |
| 2026-01-22 03:07 | First ground test. Alex: "Jeremy and I just used a ground tester in the live room and every single outlet in there has an open ground. Considering the issues we've been having with buzzes this would be a great explanation." [F] | chat.db 877629 |
| 2026-01-22 | Alex: "The qsc sub that we got repaired a couple months ago is broken again … likely cause is dirty power." [F] Thai, asked for a fix: "Sounds like an electrician thing." [F] | chat.db 877698, 877711-877712 |
| 2026-01-22 | Lifelog: someone says the building is "attached to a ground … it must have just dried out … they sometimes have to water the grounding unit." [R] | ~/Documents/Limitless AI/4-6-26 export/data-export_2026-04-07_07-51-54/lifelogs/2026/01/22/2026-01-22_23h25m04s_A-casual-intimate-conversation.md |
| 2026-01-23 | Greg emailed Brian Banks: "we're having a grounding issue … a ground that may need to get watered." Brian replied: "The grounding post used to be located on the side of the building next to the meter … not sure if it's still there. You might need to move some of your outdoor installations to find it." [F] | Gmail 19be8dfaba4a939b, 19beaf58dab7fc88 |
| 2026-01-31 | Greg forwarded Brian's reply to Alex. [F] | Gmail 19c163c5e79cf9f5 |
| 2026-03-14 | Lifelog, a staff meeting: "the room is not grounded … the actual ground stick got dried up." Greg: "I haven't blocked the electric being fixed … But it hasn't been done." [R] | .../2026/03/14/2026-03-15_00h18m04s_...md |
| ~2026-03-16 | Alex and Eric tested the panel [R, from the lifelog]. The findings: the orange outlets are the audio outlets, and they read open ground. The lights and the audio are on the same panel. Channels 2, 20 and 22 were down or crossing. Channel 2 had been out for months, and 20 and 22 went out after New Year. Bypassing the Catapult splitter behind the desk fixed channel 2. Thai said that when the split was built, "they like just pressed a bunch of the ground switches and then it kind of … magically worked." Eric was unsure whether the open ground is intentional. | ~/Documents/Limitless AI/4-6-26 export/data-export_2026-04-07_04-11-54/lifelogs/2026/03/18/2026-03-19_03h59m45s_Discussion-about-electrical-issues-in-a-studio.md |
| 2026-03-19 | Alex texted Greg: "Thai said there was an intermittent buzz since the day they set it up … likely not the catapult directly since it's a passive system. So I'm going to prioritize fixing the audio/ lights panel connection, and then solve the grounding." [F] | chat.db 892005 |
| 2026-03-20 | Lifelog, a team meeting: "an open ground, which is potentially intentional, … according to Eric … Then there's a separate issue which is that the audio and the stage lights are on the same panel." Someone adds that in a session "the lights were on and … slowly but surely, a little bit more buzz." [R] | .../2026/03/20/2026-03-20_20h15m07s_...md |
| 2026-03-31 / 04-01 | Alex asked Farzad to come in "regarding an electrical grounding issue." Farzad replied: "let's talk tomorrow around noon, need to understand the background." [F] No record of a visit exists. | chat.db 895114, 895479 |
| 2026-06-01 | Alex: "Buzz solved by simply pushing in the ground lift button on the DI box" (the Omni piano). [F] | chat.db 911261 |
| 2026-06-22 | Elijah's session recap: "issues with noise on the Stage Right snake. Had to move around ports and swap cables." [F] | Gmail 19ef21d2098a3451 |
| 2026-07-28 | Team meeting. Greg assigned Elijah his first task: "figure out the electrical grounding in the live room," with Alex briefing him. The staff view was that "the potential right now is in the splitter that's behind the console in the blue splitters." The group discussed the ground stake and watering it. "We don't know where it is." [F, transcript] | ~/claude-grid/public/responses/2026-07-28-team-meeting-transcript.html |
| 2026-07-31 | Greg shared Dennis the electrician: $50/hr, $200 minimum per visit, +1 747-248-9954. [F] | chat.db 926767 |
| 2026-08-03 | Jacob found a "grounding unit" by the neighbors, then a "New Jon discovery": a fitting "connected to the electrical box outside that goes to the roof." [F] Elijah posted "Studio Grounding Handoff" (3 pp) to TRC Core +, then sent an UPDATED version with a corrected photo C. Its text: "There is no copper wire … on either outside ro[d]." [F] | chat.db 927428-927458. PDF: ~/trc-electrical/source/imessage/2026-08-03-elijah-studio-grounding-handoff.pdf |
| 2026-08-12 to 09-02 | Insurance inspection by Carlos Sanchez for Fullsteam / RT Specialty. It required replacing the Zinsco panel and removing "Tape on circuit breakers." The carrier waived the Zinsco replacement on 8/20. Greg, 9/2: "The tape on the breaker is handled." The photos show a Square D panel with breakers labeled "OUTDOOR", "STAGE LIGHTS" and "…CH", one breaker taped with a "DO NOT TOUCH" label, and main Zinsco gear labeled 240 V. [F, from the email sweep] | Gmail thread 19ffd05a0c3b5b51; ~/trc-electrical/source/email/2026-08-13-insurance-inspection-rec-photos.pdf |
| 2026-09-04 | Elijah, planning the rehearsal-room re-cable: loose PMC/HS8 cables are "probably causing some of the electrical hum." An Apollo sharing a power source with the TV causes "a slight digital static sound." [F] This is a different room and a different mechanism from the live-room buzz. [I] | chat.db 936498 |
| 2026-09-06 | Jon Q: "the rain tripped the breaker" (washing machine / lounge). [F] | chat.db 936762 |
| 2026-09-09 | Greg sent a link to his electrician scope page, https://power.gregspero.com/electrician.html. That page covers demand control, not grounding. [F] Greg to Thai: "could you talk with Elijah about the buzz thing we're having in the live room on a few channels?" Thai: "Not sure I can offer any more help than I have before? Call whenever." [F] Elijah asked about turning off the "lighting breaker" at night. Greg: "Turn lighting breaker off. Just keep computer on." [F] | chat.db 937875, 938050-938057, 938079-938081 |
| 2026-09-12 | Johnny Cesene's post-mortem: "a buzz in channel 26 on the trident in the mixing room," with a video (IMG_7139.MOV). Greg, 9/18: "with our engineering side now." [F] | Gmail 1a0a1405f178a678, 1a0b4c54bf114ef4 |
| 2026-09-14 | Elijah: "I just met with an electrician … he was on the original team that built this place in 1995 … could come in … proper deep inspection, but it would cost like at least 250 so maybe we just save that as like a last resort." [F] | chat.db 939491 (TRC Director Chat) |
| 2026-09-15 | A calendar "Deadline board" lists: "Exit signs installed by Fri 9/18 (electrician)"; "Rain-tripping breaker: same visit, 9/18"; "Ground rods copper conductor: same visit, by 9/25". Owner: Taji. [F] | Calendar event 2lit940qaimr09aa4m4fh66pts |
| 2026-09-16 | Elijah to Greg: "If you have a moment today to look through options for watering the ground stake." [F] No reply is in iMessage. | chat.db 940141 |
| 2026-09-17 | Elijah sent a photo of a Chauvet Hurricane Haze 2D fog machine on a towel beside a power strip and cables: "causing a ton of water for fog juice to spil[l] on the carpet and on cables and outlets." [F] | chat.db 940421, ~/trc-electrical/source/imessage/2026-09-17-elijah-fog-juice-outlets.jpg |
| 2026-09-18 | Farzad to Taji: "Elijah is in the process of setting up an appt w/ Abe a lic. Electrician I work with." [F] Greg to Brian Banks: "the rain tripped a breaker that took out the lounge TV and speakers." [F] | chat.db 940598; Gmail 1a0b4c62b32ea1e6 |
| 2026-09-21 22:46 | Elijah's latest test report (quoted in full in section 3). [F] | chat.db 941340 |
| 2026-09-21 23:07 | Greg's direction to Elijah: (1) use the studio schematic and graph every connection tested; (2) mark every cable tested individually and strip layers down to the most direct connection, because only a buzz that persists then proves it is power; (3) if it is electrical, find out why it hits only those channels by building "the full MAP of the electrical of the studio … what appliance is plugged into what plug … all the way to the root of the power supply." Greg then corrected himself: the engineering.gregspero.com link "was the old engineering director application… I meant to send the schematic of the studio … Alex knows it." [F] | chat.db 941356-941371 |
| 2026-09-24 13:07 | Elijah: "This is great, I'll start on this list asap." [F] What the "list" refers to is not in iMessage. It may be an email or a message on another channel. [I] | chat.db 941792 |
3. What has been measured
- Tools used [F]: Klein RT210 plug-in tester and AstroAI AM33D DMM. Readings were taken at receptacle faces only, and nothing was opened (Elijah's handoff). Alex and Jeremy used an unnamed "ground tester" on 1/22.
- Readings on every IG (orange) receptacle tested [F, handoff]:
| Reading | Result |
|---|---|
| Hot to neutral | about 121 V, solid, on every outlet |
| Hot to ground | low, floating, drifts when touched |
| Neutral to ground | floating 30 to 60 V, unstable |
| Plug-in tester | "Open ground", center lamp only |
- Scope of the open ground [F]: every live-room outlet tested on 1/22 (Alex), and "All IG outlets tested" on 8/3 (Elijah). No ground-impedance or continuity measurement has ever been taken. No outlet-by-outlet list with circuit numbers exists in any source.
- Channels affected:
- Mixing room, 8/29/25: "different channels" plus a low-frequency hum on one channel [F].
- Channels 2, 20 and 22 in March 2026 [R]. Bypassing the Catapult cleared channel 2 [R].
- "Stage Right snake" noise, 6/22 [F].
- "A few channels" in the live room, 9/9 [F].
- Trident channel 26 in the mixing room, 9/12, with video [F].
- A rehearsal-room note says "Never plug into ch 25/26, computer return to console" [F]. It is unverified whether that applies to the Trident [I].
- Symptom description [F, handoff]: a "Loud buzz when phantom power (48V) is engaged, most notably on live-room mic lines," and an "Elevated broadband noise floor across all rooms."
- Elijah, 9/21 [F]: "Both mixers get clean signals when going direct in, the loop seems to happen when both sides are on … I don't think it's a pannel or stage box issue." [I] Read literally, this points to a ground loop between two grounded systems, such as the live-room/FOH desk and the mixing-room Trident sharing a split. That fits a floating technical ground where each system finds its own earth path. It is not proof.
- Voltage, impedance and earth-resistance values: none exist beyond the table above. [F]
4. Hypotheses and their status
| # | Hypothesis | Proposed by | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | The ground rod has "dried out" and needs watering | Landlord, via Greg's memory; Eric; Greg (1/22, 3/19, 7/28, 9/16) | Open, never tried. The rod was never located with certainty. [I] Watering a rod does not fix a missing conductor, and the handoff shows clamps with no conductor attached. |
| H2 | The technical-ground electrode was never connected ("future connection") or has corroded | Elijah, handoff 8/3 | Strongest documented hypothesis, unverified. It is backed by the 1995 Note 2 wording, the absent conductor on both outside rods, and every IG outlet failing alike. The plans put the tech rods inside the machine rooms, so the outdoor rod Elijah photographed is probably the service electrode rather than the tech rod. That is an inference. |
| H3 | Audio and stage lights share a panel, so lighting noise gets onto the audio | Alex/Eric in March; Greg "had a feeling" | Reported, not documented. No panel schedule backs it. The insurance photo shows "STAGE LIGHTS" and "OUTDOOR" on one Square D panel. The handoff says Farzad's electrician "reports a grounding conductor is already landed in the subpanel labeled 'Outdoor / Stage Lights'" [R]. The 1995 spec forbade lighting on tech power. |
| H4 | The Catapult splitter or its ground-lift switches cause it | Alex/Eric in March; staff view on 7/28 | Partly supported, partly contradicted. Bypassing it fixed channel 2 in March [R]. Thai says it is passive. Elijah on 9/21 says it is "not a panel or stage box issue." |
| H5 | The lights cause the buzz | Alex, 10/23/25; team, 3/20 | Consistent with H3; untested in isolation. |
| H6 | Cabling or dressing near monitors | Elijah, 9/4 | Applies to the rehearsal room only. |
| H7 | Farzad's 2025 outdoor work disturbed grounding | [I] from the timing: Greg's 10/24/25 warning, the 11/25 neutral rewire, the 12/1/25 lobby buzz, the 1/22/26 open-ground test | Unexamined. No evidence either way. |
| H8 | Open ground is intentional (IG design) | Eric [R] | [I] IG receptacles still need an equipment ground back to a ground bus. An "open ground" reading on a plug-in tester means no ground path at all, which is a shock hazard (the handoff says the same). |
5. Known facts: building, panels, circuits, ground
- Service [F]: "120/240 volts", 200/400 A, and the 2024 report ticks both 3-phase and single-phase. The rest of the evidence is:
- Main Zinsco gear is labeled "240 V" in the insurance photos.
- The sauna is 3-phase 208 V (
~/electrical-plan/research/alternatives.md), and Farzad said the sauna is the only 3-phase equipment. - [I] The service is probably 120/208 V 3-phase. This is unresolved.
- Meters [F]: there are two SCE meters: SCE meter 1 (now SCE meter 2) and SCE meter 3. Which panel feeds which meter is unknown (
~/.claude/projects/-Users-gregspero-claude-grid/memory/project_trc_electrical_demand_plan.md). - Panels on site [F]:
- Panels labeled PNL A, B and C, with covers never opened for testing (handoff photo C).
- A Cutler-Hammer subpanel with Console #1 through #5, #6 to #8 "Mechanical Rm." It has about 16 single-pole 20 A breakers (handoff photo D, which I read). The caption says "deadfront off", but the photo shows the door open with the deadfront on. [I]
- A Square D panel with OUTDOOR, STAGE LIGHTS and "…CH" labels and a taped breaker (insurance photos).
- The Zinsco main gear, where the carrier waived replacement.
- A roof panel for HVAC (Victor, 9/9).
- The "outdoor panel" Farzad rewired with a neutral in November 2025.
- A new sub panel in the electrical room (RodCo, 2024).
- Ground electrode [F]: photo A shows an outdoor rod on the turf with ground-type clamps and no conductor. Photo B shows a corroded clamp in an in-ground box near the service with no visible conductor. The 2024 inspector saw a grounding connection to a cold-water pipe and a ground rod at the main panel that "appears serviceable". Brian says the "grounding post used to be … next to the meter."
- [I] Two ground systems are likely being conflated. One is the building service ground (cold-water pipe plus rod at the main panel), which the 2024 inspector saw. The other is the 1995 technical ground (rods in the machine rooms, #2 to the electrical room), whose electrode appears unconnected.
- Reconciliation with the 1995 plans [F from plans-electrical,
out/plans-electrical-findings.mdsection 11]: - The 1995 tech-ground rods are drawn inside, one in each machine room (today's Office / machine room), with #2 in 3/4" conduit to the electrical room.
- No sheet shows an outdoor or alley rod, the service ground, the meter, or a panel schedule. The plan set has no E-sheets, because the electrical permit was filed separately (General Note 1.E).
- The electrical room is the narrow curved-wall closet at the alley end, off the Studio A entry vestibule. Two unlabeled panel outlines and a TEL board are drawn on its west wall.
- The HVAC spec on Sheet A-6.1 reads "3 phase 240 v".
- [I] The unconnected outdoor rod near the meter is most likely the service electrode, not the 1995 tech rod. If so, the tech rods would be under the machine-room floor, and nobody has looked for them yet.
- Outlet mapping [F]: the only mapping that exists is Elijah's marked-up Sheet A-5.1, with IG outlets circled. It is referenced in the handoff as "available separately" and was not found in any source searched. No outlet-to-breaker map exists. Greg asked for one on 9/21.
